Another Another World

Another Another World is a documentary film by artist and filmmaker Jack Whitefield. Inspired by its 1948 namesake Another World, a British travelogue that documents the lives of artists and fishermen in St Ives, Cornwall, Whitefield conducts a visual conversation between the past and present of a town steeped in artistic and maritime history. Shot on 16mm over the course of the summer of 2018, the film follows Cornish artist Danny Fox from his home in Cornwall to the streets of Downtown Los Angeles. Coupled with Fox’s narrated studio notes and Relf Heygate’s original score, the film tells a story of risk and reward, success and failure, romance and nostalgia.

“I like shooting documentaries on film because it lets me work instinctively, without the need for rigid planning or scripting. I try to stay close to my subjects, living alongside them as much as possible, rather than arriving with a fixed idea of the story. Using a Bolex with just one lens, a few minutes of film per roll, and no synced sound, only loose field notes from my Zoom recorder reflects the unpredictability of real life. If I miss something, I miss it. If the film runs out or the light fades, that’s simply part of the process. These limitations don’t get in the way they shape the film. They guide the way the narrative forms and push me to be resourceful and creative with how I shoot and tell the story.” – Jackson Whitefield

The film will screen at the Newlyn Filmhouse in the UK on June 13, 14 and 15th.
