The Darkside

There’s a chasm in surf culture.

On the right, there’s the pro’s pros. Those who make their money treating surfing like a real sport (it is) and treating their bodies incredibly well to maintain the highest tier of performance (have you seen them)? As to be expected, the right is really good at surfing.

On the left there’s the anti-establishment cool kids club. Punk, heavily tattooed, aesthetically pleasing and not ones to shy away from a good time (why would they)? The left is also really good at surfing.

It feels as we progress within the surf industry vortex brands are looking for one of these two things. Team rosters are often crafted in this very light, pulling from both the right and left to create a perfect balance to pull in all facets of surf fandom.

Thankfully, Dark Seas is a pleasant and willing departure from the norm.

Founded in 2009, they’ve quietly built a name for themselves amongst knowers and believers. Subtly cool without sacrificing performance, anyone who has owned a pair of their pants or boardies knows that they’re the truth, and their latest film Darkside, is no different.

Per team rider and film editor Schuyler Allen: “It’s been sick getting to chase waves with this crew and cut up the clips. North Carolina’s Owen Moss is our latest addition to the team and that last section from Mexico was his maiden trip with us. Our first session at this spot, he caught that wave in the crispy gold morning light and just stood tall and slipped out the doggy door. I knew right then, he got the ender.”

Their roster beautifully bridges the gap between surfing’s right and left. With Dylan Hord, Duran Barr, Schuyler Allen, Braden Mather, Kai Barger, Tyler Larronde and Owen Moss you have synchronicity.

All good surfers, all good people, and all in it for the right reasons, just like the brand that adorns their beaks. If you don’t believe me, look no further than the smiles on their faces as they thread tubes throughout Hawaii, Ireland, the East Coast and Mexico… and if you want some real fun, watch through to the end sequence for a totally free and multi-hued experience.
