Mallorca has always had the softest of sweet spots in the collective Wasted Talent corazón.
Nestled in the lee of the Spanish Mediterranean but standing fiercely on its own, the towering Serra de Tramuntana mountains, dappled in pines, form the backbone of the island, colliding with crystal blue waters at the base of cliffs and hidden calas, with cicadas providing the soundtrack. The light is to die for. It is the jewel in the crown of the Balearics. It is the epitome, the peak of Mediterranean living.
It is, in essence—paradise.
It is here that we first met Kate Bellm, where she kindly hosted us a few years back to premiere a few Wasted Talent films at her sublime and captivating hotel and creation, Hotel Corazón—now undoubtedly the place to be in Mallorca. I remember the night of the premiere, moving bean bags and hunting for ice to keep beers cold; Kate was with us every step of the way, laughing at the challenges of operating a hotel and, by her own admission, ‘out of her depth’—which we found hard to believe as the hotel, as well as being a work of art, is a slick operation. I was struck by her humility, a person not afraid to get in the trenches to get things off the ground. No doubt a mindset that has carried Kate far as a photographer, mother, publisher, and now hotelier. Now, Kate’s imagery of the island from her book La Isla has become synonymous with the contemporary Mallorquín aesthetic and graces the pages that follow.
A love letter to Mallorca.
